News: Man killed after crashing into 11-foot alligator in Lithia

LITHIA, FL – A man was killed after hitting an alligator while driving on a Lithia roadway Thursday morning.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, 59-year-old John Hopkins from Lithia fatally crashed on Balm-Picnic Road, 2 miles west of County Road 39. He slammed into the 11-foot gator, which caused his vehicle to go off-road and flip into a ditch.

Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene. The gator also died.

Another driver on the roadway spotted the wreckage and called 911.
