PINELLAS COUNTY, FL –  The Florida Highway Patrol said a car wreck in Pinellas County Tuesday night left one person dead and another hospitalized.

A report by WFTS said that the accident happened along Starkey Road shortly before 10 p.m.  According to investigators, a driver lost control of a sedan while speeding northbound and drove off the roadway.

The car struck a wire for a utility pole, then crashed into a block wall, and split in half.  The back half of the car hit a tree and two fences before ending up in a home’s backyard.

A passenger was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.  He was a 30-year-old man from Apalachicola, Florida.  The driver, a 26-year-old Largo man, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The FHP said neither man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
