OCALA, FL – Two vehicles were involved in a deadly head-on crash in Marion County last week, the Ocala StarBanner reports.

The accident occurred on State Road 40 near Northeast 118th Avenue Road, where first responders arrived at the scene at about 3:16 p.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of a Hyundai Elantra was going west on SR 40 and swerved to avoid traffic that had slowed for a turning vehicle.  The Elantra crashed into a Hyundai Kona that was going east on the roadway.

A 70-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Kona was pronounced dead after being taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.  Her 74-year-old husband who was driving the car was transported to the same hospital with serious injuries. Both were Port Orange residents.

The driver of the Elantra, a 29-year-old Deltona woman, was also taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital with serious injuries.

The crash shut down SR 40 in both directions between Northeast 118th Avenue Road and 125th Terrace Road.
