SUMTER COUNTY, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol was dispatched to a deadly two-vehicle collision in Sumter County last week.

According to a WKMG report, the incident took place Friday, Aug. 15 on State Road 471 near County Road 788.

The crash involved a Mercedes-Benz SUV and a Nissan Titan that was towing an enclosed utility trailer.  The FHP’s initial investigation indicates that the driver of the Mercedes was traveling south in the northbound lane for an unknown reason at about 1:20 a.m., and collided with the northbound Nissan nearly head-on.

SUMTER COUNTY, FL – A motorcycle accident on Interstate 75 in Sumter County on Sunday afternoon left a man dead and a woman injured, reports the Villages-News.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a man riding a Honda Goldwing motorcycle was trying to exit into an I-75 rest area near mile marker 306 at about 2:40 p.m.  The rider was unable to negotiate a curve and went off the roadway, where the bike entered a drainage retention area and crashed into an embankment.

The operator of the motorcycle, an 84-year-old man from Carlisle, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene.  His passenger, an 80-year-old woman from Eaton, Ohio, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

SUMTER COUNTY, FL – A teenage driver was arrested following a fatal car accident that occurred in Sumter County on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The Daily Commercial reports five teenage boys were in a Dodge Charger going south on Interstate 75 at a high rate of speed shortly before 3 p.m.  The Florida Highway Patrol states that the driver, a 17-year-old boy, was recklessly overtaking slower traffic and veered off the interstate in order to avoid a crash.

The Dodge then collided with a tree and caught fire.  A 16-year-old passenger was killed while a 15-year-old passenger was seriously injured.  Two other passengers, ages 13 and 17, sustained minor injuries.  State troopers said the driver, who also suffered minor injuries, left the car, took off the license plate and fled on foot.  He was later apprehended at a chicken coop in Oxford.  All the occupants of the Dodge were from Inverness.

SUMTER COUNTY, FL – A motorcycle collision on County Road 476B in Sumter County on Monday left a rider dead, according to a WKMG report.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a tractor-trailer was heading north shortly after 5 p.m. and was stopped in traffic while waiting to make a turn onto County Road 631.  A man was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle at a high rate of speed and was not able to stop in time before colliding with the back of the truck.

The motorcyclist, a 22-year-old Dade City man, died at the scene.  The tractor-trailer was driven by a 67-year-old man from Bushnell.

SUMTER COUNTY, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol investigated a fatal car crash that occurred in Sumter County early Wednesday morning, reports WKMG.

The FHP learned that the driver of a Kia Forte was going west on State Road 44 in Wildwood shortly before 5 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve near County Road 475.

The car then went off the roadway, and struck a utility pole and a barbed wire fence.  The motorist, a 30-year-old man from Inverness, was pronounced dead at the scene.  He was not wearing a seat belt, according to state troopers.

SUMTER COUNTY, FL – The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a man who allegedly left the scene of a crash last week.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Tayvone Johnson, was accused of fleeing on foot after the accident April 2 near the Florida National Cemetery.   The crash occurred during a pursuit by law enforcement authorities.

Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies joined the Florida Highway Patrol in the search for Johnson in the area of Interstate 75 and County Road 476B.   He was eventually arrested after being located in the area of County Road 673.  Three other suspects were previously taken into custody.

OXFORD, FL – Traffic was disrupted along Interstate 75 in Sumter County Monday morning due to an overnight accident, WESH reports.

The Florida Highway Patrol and emergency crews responded to the wreck shortly before 1:30 a.m. on I-75 north near County Road 475 near Wildwood.

The FHP said there were injuries as a result of the incident, but did not release further details on who had been hurt.

SUMTER COUNTY, FL – A van and a dump truck were involved in a deadly collision in Sumter County early Tuesday morning, according to WFLA.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation found that the driver of the dump truck was going east on County Road 476 at about 5:40 a.m. when he went through a stop sign at the intersection with State Road 471.   The dump truck collided with a Chevy van that had been heading north on SR-471.

The Chevy driver, a 45-year-old man from Webster, was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.  The driver of the dump truck, a 63-year-old Florida City man, was not injured in the wreck.

SUMTER COUNTY, FL – A multi-vehicle accident in Sumter County last week left one person dead and two others injured, reports WKMG.

The Florida Highway Patrol was called to the scene Jan. 23 on State Road 44 in the area of Industrial Drive.  The FHP’s crash report stated that the driver of a truck did not slow down or stop for traffic ahead of him and rear-ended a Honda Civic at about 12:45 p.m.    The truck also collided with a Ford F-150 ahead of the Civic as well as a Toyota Rav4 in an adjacent lane.

The Honda driver, a 50-year-old man from Wildwood, suffered fatal injuries.  The truck driver, a 40-year-old man from New Jersey, and the Ford driver were hospitalized with minor injuries.

SUMTER COUNTY, FL – New details have been released in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision in Sumter County, reports WESH.

The Florida Highway Patrol released information regarding the vehicle being sought in the incident, which occurred Jan. 17 in the area of County Road 475 and State Road 44 at about 5:30 p.m.

The FHP’s investigation determined that the driver of an unidentified car was heading south on C.R. 474 while approaching a stop sign and did not yield when entering the intersection.    The driver of a Nissan Altima going west on S.R. 44 swerved to the left to avoid a collision with that vehicle and entered the eastbound lanes, where the car crashed into an eastbound Chevy pickup truck.  The Nissan and the Chevy both caught fire.
