A 72-year-old man was killed after being struck by four vehicles in Eustis Thursday.

A Grand Island resident drove up to the scene before paramedics arrived and saw the man lying on the ground. Another person was trying to revive him while another person called for help, according to reports. The FHP noted the area was rainy, without streetlights and very dark.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers are still looking for the third and fourth vehicles that struck the deceased. Anyone with information can call FHP at 407-737-2213.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at least 5,000 reported deaths are the result of motor vehicle v. pedestrian accidents each year. Sadly, more than 78,000 pedestrians suffer serious injuries every year from an accident involving a car or truck.

A pedestrian collision can result in death, head and brain injuries, disfigurement, nerve damage, scarring, loss of a limb and other serious physical and mental impairments. In many cases, pedestrian accident victims require specialized treatment, such as long-term physical and psychological care. The physical pain and mental anguish suffered by pedestrians injured in auto accidents are often extreme, and the cost for medical care can be astounding. A Florida Pedestrian Accident Lawyer at Whittel & Melton can make sure that you and your family has the help they need to deal with these injuries.

At least nine employees of the Blue Rhino gas plant in Tavares were injured late Monday night in a series of propane explosions.

At this time, no fatalities have been reported.

There were nearly 53,000 propane tanks where the blasts took place. Residents of the area say the explosions were visible from 10 miles away and continued for at least 30 minutes.

According to Tavares fire officials and federal authorities, the explosions at the Lake County propane depot are believed to have been set off by equipment failure and human error.

Investigators had to call of their probe Tuesday due to the risk posed by a large, leaking storage tank at the plant.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration have also opened an investigation into this incident.

According to state records, the plant passed inspections by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in March and as recently as July 19 with no violations.

744470_fire_5.jpgFirefighters, police and paramedics reported nine injuries Tuesday, eight of whom were workers. Five of the injured employees were listed in critical condition Tuesday.

Gas explosions are generally caused from some sort of negligence on the part of an individual or company. A propane explosion occurs from a gas leak of some kind in combination with an ignition spark. Gas tanks, pipelines and valves are supposed to be leak-proof, so when a leak does occur that results in an explosion, more often than not negligence is to blame. Any number of negligent acts could cause the leak, or even the spark. Poor design, flaws in the manufacturing process or improper installation, inspection, maintenance or repair could all lead to an accidental explosion.

Unfortunately, when a blast occurs, often those within the space or near the site suffer serious injuries. These injuries can be permanent and life-changing, and even result in death. Propane explosion injuries often include:

• Broken Bones
• Burn Injuries
• Lacerations
• Disfigurement
• Amputation
• Traumatic Brain Injuries
• Spinal Cord Trauma
• Catastrophic Injuries

A 41-year-old father and his three kids were killed Friday night in a car crash in Lake County.

The man apparently lost control of his 2009 Mercedes Benz around 6:45 p.m. on State Road 33.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers do not know what caused the man to lose control of his vehicle. Reports indicate the man was traveling southbound on a S.R. 33 curve near Groveland Airport Road when his car left the road, struck a tree and a pole, causing the vehicle to become airborne and crash into another tree that ultimately crushed the car’s roof.

The man and his 9-year-old son were pronounced dead at the scene. His other son, 7, and daughter, 2, passed away at the hospital.

The speed limit for the road is 60 mph, but troopers do not yet know if the man was speeding.

Court records indicate the man received several citations for speeding and failing to obey traffic signals in counties across Central Florida.

The man and his sons were wearing seatbelts, but troopers say the force of the crash was so great that it would not have mattered if they were wearing them properly. The young girl was in a car seat.

Troopers are still investigating what may have caused the crash.

568830_mercedes.jpgSadly, even just a small driving error or momentary lapse in judgment can lead to a devastating car accident. Due to this, all drivers have a duty to operate their vehicles with as much caution as possible to ensure the safety of their passengers and all others on the roadways. When drivers fail to drive safely and partake in reckless behavior, the odds of an auto accident occurring becomes much more likely. Many of the auto accidents that occur in Lake County are caused by the following:

• Distracted Driving
• Talking on a Cell Phone or Texting while Driving
• Speeding
• Hazardous Roads
• Failing to Follow Traffic Signals
• Changing Lanes without Signaling Properly
• Driving Under the Influence of Drugs and/or Alcohol
Any of the above actions can cause an accident that is quite serious, and lead to severe personal injuries and even wrongful death. Negligent drivers often react too late to dangers in the road until it is too late to avoid a wreck. However, it is important to note that even the most careful and considerate driver can lose control of their car on a hazardous road and cause a serious collision.

While most cars today are outfitted with more safety features than ever before to protect occupants in the event of a crash, even the best safety measures cannot prevent drivers and passengers from suffering the effects of a crash. Seatbelts and airbags can protect victims of a minor crash, but when a major wreck occurs, the force of the collision may be too great for these features to prove useful. The effects of a car accident can range in severity from cuts and bruises, sprains and strains and fractures and broken bones to vehicle ejections, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma and death.

The Wrongful Death of a 70-year-old resident of The Villages occurred when a sport utility vehicle struck and killed the man while he crossed a Titusville street. He was visiting the Space Coast to see the launch of space shuttle Endeavour, which never launched due to technical difficulties.

According to Orlando reports, the man was hit, just before noon, by a 2002 Honda CRV. Investigators said that pedestrians were packed into the area and cars were parked on both sides of the four-lane highway where the accident occurred.

Police supposedly said the man was not in a crosswalk when he was hit. He was flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead around 5 p.m.

An investigation into the crash is still underway and charges are pending against the driver. Alleged skid mark lengths at the scene indicate that speed may have been a factor that caused the collision.

Federal statistics show speed as a causal factor in one out of every three fatal car crashes. According to government statistics, the probability of death, disfigurement or debilitating injury doubles for every 10 mph over 50 mph. Speeding can reduce a driver’s capability to maneuver securely around curves or objects in the roadway as well as lengthen the distance necessary to stop a vehicle in a crisis.

The severity of a motor vehicle crash increases with speed. Likewise, the effectiveness of automobile restraint devices and safety precautions, like air bags and seat belts weaken with amplified speed. Many drivers fail to see the grave dangers speeding creates. To many Florida drivers, accelerating speed to a few miles an hour over the speed limit is a suitable gamble, thinking the worst result could be a speeding ticket. However, the facts are crystal clear-driving too fast for certain settings or operating a vehicle excessively over the speed limit can kill you and others.
