The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the Southern Baptist Convention in the wake of its clergy sexual abuse crisis.

The DOJ has subpoenaed the SBC’s Nashville-based Executive Committee, but no individuals have been subpoenaed at this time, according to reports.

This investigation comes months after a 288-page scorching report from the investigative firm Guidepost Solutions that showed how SBC leaders mishandled claims of sexual abuse claims for decades and went as far as to threaten and mistreat abuse victims.

Leaders from SBC seminaries, missionary groups, the Executive Committee, as well as the SBC’s newly elected president, Texas pastor Bart Berber, promised to cooperate fully with the DOJ’s investigation.

Black-Good-Friday-Elegant-Facebook-300x251So, what does this mean for victims and why is the DOJ investigating now? In the past, the DOJ would not usually get involved in sex abuse claims as these are normally handled by state or local law enforcement. The DOJ will get involved in cases where a federal crime has occurred, such as transporting trafficking or sex abuse victims across state lines.

It is rare to hear about the FBI investigating the activities of religious groups, but as the DOJ is currently investigating the Archdiocese of New Orleans to discover whether abusive Catholic priests traveled with children across state lines, news of their investigation into the sex abuse claims among the SBC, which operates 47,000 independent member churches nationwide – not just in the South, does not come as a big surprise following the blistering report released by Guidepost documenting more than 20 years of sex abuse claims involving an estimated 400 SBC leaders.

The DOJ has also been prompted to become more proactive in sex abuse claims involving larger organizations following the USA Gymnastics scandal involving Dr. Larry Nassar, a former team doctor, who was arrested and sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing more than 150 females. A 2021 Justice Department report uncovered that the FBI mishandled allegations of sex abuse of athletes by Nassar.

Investigating church leaders for covering up sex abuse can be challenging, but it can be done. It must be demonstrated that there was some type of intent to protect or hide the abuser. It will certainly be interesting to see how the DOJ investigation into the SBC plays out – our hope is that all survivors of abuse at the hands of SBC leaders will achieve some sense of justice. In the first three months of 2022, more than 9,500 people were killed in traffic fatalities — a figure that shows this is the deadliest start to a year in the U.S. in two decades.

In seven states and the District of Columbia, officials estimated that traffic fatalities increased by at least 50%. As a nation, deaths jumped up 7% when compared to the same time period as 2021.

Officials have stated that the rise in traffic deaths started in 2020 when the pandemic began, but the problem has continued causing the number of deaths to keep moving in the wrong direction.

Experts have been grappling with what is causing the spike in traffic deaths, but have pointed out that traffic patterns changed during the pandemic, so there is less congestion and more speeding. There is also evidence that more drivers are partaking in risky behaviors behind the wheel, such as not wearing seat belts and driving impaired.

Urban-Night-Out-Invitation-300x300Experts saw traffic deaths spike in march 2020 when the pandemic hit and risky behaviors surged. This trend was something they hoped would dwindle, but the numbers do not lie.

NHTSA reported 7,893 traffic fatalities during the first 3 months of 2020, which was a period that preceded the pandemic. In 2021, the numbers rose to 8,935 deaths in the first quarter of the year, and in 2022 traffic deaths are up to 9,560 in the first quarter.

That number – 9,560 – is the most deaths in the first three months of a year since 2002.

Experts have said that the first quarter of the year is consistently the least deadly on roads across the U.S.

Earlier this year, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, said that an effort to make the roads safer would be developed focusing road designs and individual driver behaviors. This effort will be supported by billions of dollars in infrastructure law, including a $5 billion fund that will go to grants for cities and towns across the country to keep pedestrians and bicyclists safe on the roads.

The infrastructure law also includes mandates for technology aimed at addressing the top causes of traffic deaths, including breath monitoring devices for alcohol in new cars. This system is in testing with the NHTSA, but any mandates are years away.

Another cause of this surge in traffic fatalities can be attributed to longer morning and evening commutes. NHTSA reports show that Americans drove more than 750 billion miles between January and March during the first three months of 2022, an increase of more than 5 percent compared with 2021.

The NHTSA also noted that the death rate on U.S. roads during the first three months of this year was 1.27 per 100 million miles driven, which is also a higher number than last year.

So, where does Florida rank in all of this? The Sunshine State saw 988 deaths in the first quarter of 2021. For that same time period in 2022, Florida saw 998 deaths – a 1% change.

Florida is consistently ranked as one of the top spots in the nation for traffic-related deaths. The state has a high number of auto collisions, pedestrian crashes, and bicycle crashes. According to Florida transportation officials, on average, eight people are killed and 49 people are injured in traffic accidents throughout the state every day.

With numbers so high, it is very important to remember the rules of the road, so that you and others sharing Florida roadways can stay safe. It is estimated that 90% of car accidents are caused by human error, so it is wise to make good decisions when you are behind the wheel so that everyone can get to and from their destination safely. It is always in your best interest to follow the speed limit, minimize your aggressions against other drivers or pedestrians/bicyclists, refrain from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and avoid distractions like using your cell phone, applying makeup, fiddling with your GPS or radio dials, or eating while driving.
